Don’t leave Aged Care Planning until the last minute
Just 8 months into 2024 and we have already assisted over 250 clients transitioning into Residential Aged care. The most common thing we hear is “Mum is in hospital and can’t go home, we urgently need to see you”.
Whilst for many people, the final decision or need to move into care can come suddenly, due to a fall or an operation, for most, the inevitability of the move can be identified months earlier.
By not seeking advice until it becomes urgent, many are panicked into making poor decisions, find reduced choice when it comes to finding a vacancy and the whole process becomes even more stressful than it already is.
Waiting until the last moment to look into home care options can be a disaster. Given there is currently a 10-12 month waiting list for a home care package in many areas, many elderly people find themselves having to move into residential care simply because they cannot get the assistance they need at home quickly enough and are unable to cope wat home without assistance.
In most instances, a future need for home care or residential aged care can be identified well in advance. By getting early advice and having a better understanding of the processes and costs involved, residents and families can make the transition far less stressful and concentrate more on the emotional support their parents need at this time.
